Read Mark's tales of his Journey to date. An incredibly tough and challenging cycle leg. Go to MB2MC. Earlier in May, SportsTrack was used by Mark Beaumont during the Etape Caledonia. Mark - the fastest man to cycle around the world - went off on another adventure in Europe.
Now, he and a team of amateur, like-minded adventurers will hike, bike and ski from Chamonix, across the Alps, then down through Provincal villages, heading towards the Mediterranean Sea. From there, they will catamaran across to Corsica, before tackling a 150km kayak leg around its coastline, renowned for the abundant sea and bird life. After 3 days on the water, they will cycle to the foot of Mont Cinto and then trek to the summit to plant the Active Earth Peace and Sustainability Through Adventure Flag.
Mark Beaumont first made history when he smashed the standing world circumnaviagtion cycle record by nearly 2 months. He completed the epic 18 297 mile distance in 194 days - totaly annihilating the previous record of 276 days (and his personal target of 210 days!). Read about his world cycle at ARTEMIS WORLD CYCLE.
This time round, Mark is both hosting and participating in the Mont Blanc to Mont Cinto Challenge - a 5-stage adventure expedition of 1000km across France.
Each stage will be led by a current record holder of the particular discipline, and each leg will be joined by adventure athletes who will be taking part in at least one stage of the Challenge. The purpose of the Challenge is to raise awareness for the launch of the Earth Active Foundation, which aims to provide funds and social loans to support social projects that lead to shift towards peace and sustainability.
Read about this incredible adventure, see the international athletes taking part, inform yourself about the Earth Active Foundation, pledge your support and add your words of encouragement.

Join KFM`s Nic Marais and Ronnie Muhl as they trek the Umbwe Route to summit Kilimanjaro. Their aim - to plant the Red Cross Children`s Hospital flag on the highest point of the African continent. A continent whose children they have cared for for many years. A children's hospital where you know that your child will be in the best hands in a time of need
Mountaineers consider the climb to Uhuru Peak relatively easy. The biggest challenge to self are altitude sickness and fatigue, compounded by headaches, nausea, dizziness, insomnia and a roaring resting pulse. But the sweet sense of achievement after months of preparation makes every ache and pain worth it when you get to the top and gaze over the continent that is your homeland.
Ronnie - who is on a mission to complete his 7 Summits, and who summited Mount Everest earlier this year will be leading the team as they climb up the Umbwe route to Baranco (at 4000m), then traverse the base of the mountain to Barafu Hut (4670m), before pushing to the summit. If all goes well, they will reach Uhuru Peak - at 5 895m - on Thursday, 12th June.
Nic is raising awareness of, and money for the Red Cross Children`s Hospital. The hospital specialises in child care and is dedicated to serving the paediatric needs of the children of Africa.
Pledge your support by going to THE CHILDREN`S HOSPITAL TRUST.

TEAM PROFILE
JAMES STEWART
A multi-talented farmer who believes in leading by example. He is the navigator of the Team. 'Lettuce' to all who know him, James is active in Mountain Search and Rescue operations, and is enormously involved with the Knysna Canoe Club and Plett Surf Lifesaving. With vast experience in water-based sports and mountain biking, including earning EPCU Colours, and a string of Adventure Races behind his name, Lettuce inspires and motivates his Team to push themselves to the limit to achieve their targets.
CHRIS CREWDSON
An all-rounder in the great outdoors, 'Che-Che' has been the Development Officer for the Knysna Canoe Club and the Action Cycling MTB Racing Team. His strength and stamina have seen him through endurance events including the Berg River Marathon, the Peninsula Iron Man, the Foot of Africa and the Three Peaks. This year will see Che-Che take on the world of AR with a vengeance! With his relatively fresh introduction to multi-sport endurance events, his responsibility as press officer will give everyone good insight into what the Team experiences.
CHRISTINE COLLINS
An impressive career in AR has seen 'BB' included in Team Germany in the 1996 Camel Trophy in Kalimantan. She has also been involved as support crew in the Land Rover G4 Challenges around the world. BB is no stranger to AR, and her mental and physical strength when faced with adversity often leave the rest of the Team astounded!
JEFF WILLCOCKS
The intimidating list of achievements and experience behind 'Machine' on his mountain bike and in his running shoes is well known in those circles. He is best remembered for his incredible performance of riding with his partner on a tandem in the 2007 Cape Epic - an astounding feat perfomed unselfishly to get his medically-challenged partner over the finish. Although biking is his forte, marathons are a close second. Also relatively new to the AR scene, his awe-inspiring strength and inspiration on the bike has made its mark on the Team.
AMANDA WILLIAMSON
Full of positive and enthusiastic energy for any challenge and with a 3rd place in the 2007 TransBaviaans, 'Maz' is no stranger to podium positions in the Scott Night Bike events, and her name constantly appears in MTB race top placings. Her commitment to excellence and desire to experience every angle of AR are qualities that will see her through the year ahead.
THE ONES TO WATCH!!

The SwaziXtreme, held in the Kingdom of Swaziland, has a proud tradition of challenging competitors with routes that incorporate awesome mountains and valleys, waterfalls and rivers, forests and plains. Added to this, the friendly rural people and an atmosphere of risk and reward make for one of the best adventures on the calendar.
SX08 - the 8th consecutive Swazi Extreme - shifted focus this year. Strategy and brain-power determines the top placed teams in this 3-day adventure race. The format for SX08 was for teams to do the maximum distance and gather the most control point clips within the time period. This meant that in addition to the mandatory CP's, there were optional, hidden ones as well, which teams had to find to gain the extra points. These points were tucked away in the most exciting and adventurous corners of the race footprint, demanding both skill and speed to reach, testing each teams' navigational and strategic skills to the limit. Strategy and teamwork were paramount, with decisions on when to go straight and rest and when to zig-zag to collect points being the likely difference between winning and losing teams. This new race format increased the likelihood of a higher finishing rate for the event and increased the tempo up front as leading teams constantly concertinad back into contact with each other throughout the race.
The PRO event was non-stop day and night. This event offered 54 hours of racing time from 05h00 on Friday, 2nd May to 11h00 on Sunday, 4th May. The minimum compulsory distance was 220km. Race elements allowed for an extra 100km of awesome optional distance. This presented a great opportunity for local and international teams to test their team skills and preparation ahead of The Bull of Africa in August. Disciplines included hiking, mountain-biking, kloofing, white-water tubing and iconic rope-work sections.
